I worked for two years as a Counsellor for Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard Counselling Service, using an affirmative approach and now work with LGBTQ+ clients in my private practice.
What is LGBTQ+ Affirmative Counselling? It is not about using special tools or techniques, however, I believe that it is important for counsellor working with LGBTQ+ clients to have an understanding of homophobia, transphobia, bi-phobia, bi-erasure, heterosexism and gender identity issues.
The term LGBTQ+ itself encompasses an enormous diversity of people and experiences, therefore it can be easier for a client to engage in counselling when they know that their they and their life or experiences will be judged or misunderstood.
Above all a LGBTQ+ affirmative approach is about accepting, understanding and affirming each client for who they are as an individual, within a safe space where they are free to express themselves without the fear of prejudice.
I offer individual counselling and also couples counselling to clients who identify as LGBTQ+
